Okapi Wines

  • Small, family-owned winery in Napa.
  • Tasting room by appointment at the Caves at Soda Canyon in Napa.
  • Produce 300-500 cases per year across Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Rose and red blends.

As a young lawyer in the 1980s, Dan Johnson handled a legal matter for a well-known winemaker, which sparked his interest in wine and dreams of having a vineyard in Napa Valley.

In 2006, his dream became a reality. Dan, and his wife Kim, transformed a walnut orchard into a vineyard. Although his business his relatively small — Okapi produces about 300 cases a year — what the winery lacks in quantity is made up in quality with award-winning wines that zing with innovation and creativity.

The winery’s name comes from the mysterious okapi (pronounced oh-KAH-pee), a rarely seen relative of the giraffe with a long tongue and velvety zebra-like stripes that make it impossible to find in its habitat - the mountain rainforest of equatorial Africa. Dan and Kim Johnson say that their wine is as rare and unique as its elusive namesake, found only on one small dot on the planet.

2012 Oak Knoll Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley

  • 300 cases produced.
  • 100% Cabernet Sauvignon
  • 22 months in 75% new French oak, unfiltered

Tasting Notes:
Rich aromas fill the glass of the 2012 Okapi Cab with dark summer berries, cassis, cocoa, toasty French oak and a hint of cracked pepper. Bold, fleshy and dense, the ripe flavors create a luxuriously textured montage of blackberries, black plums and cocoa on a solid tannic structure. Considerable density at the core of this wine indicates that it will continue to open and evolve with grace and style over the next 20 years.
